The Part 135 Director of Maintenance is responsible for the safe, compliant, and efficient maintenance of all aircraft listed under the company’s 14 CFR Part 135 certificate. This role ensures adherence to all regulatory requirements, oversees operational control of aircraft, and manages maintenance programs, personnel qualifications, technical documentation, and communication with the FAA. The Director also provides leadership in maintenance planning, reporting, training support, and continuous improvement initiatives to maintain airworthiness and support flight operations.
Essential Functions
- Maintain a close liaison with the Chief Operating Officer to provide current status of aircraft and forecast downtime
- Ensure company aircraft are maintained in accordance with the Airworthiness Standards prescribed by applicable Regulations, Airworthiness Directives and Company Policy
- Evaluate the effect of Federal Aviation Regulations and other mandates on current and future operations
- Exercise Operational Control of all aircraft listed in Operations Specifications D085
- Oversee the management of the aircraft maintenance activities including overhaul, modifications, maintenance and repair of aircraft airframe, rotors, propellers, engines and appliances
- Ensure maintenance procedures are evaluated for impact on line maintenance personnel, confirming they are effective and not overly burdensome
- Maintain, complete, and forward 14 CFR 135.417 Mechanical Interruption Summary (MIS) Reports to the FAA
- Manage 14 CFR 135.415 Service Difficulty Reports (SDR) and ensure timely submission to the FAA
- Establish maintenance policies, procedures, and standards
- Ensure the fuel quality control policies and procedures are effective and revise the Fuel Quality Control Manual as required
- Liaison with the Certificate-Holding District Office (CHDO) Management Team
- Ensure that all maintenance personnel are properly qualified and trained for their respective assignments
- Manage the Minimum Equipment List (MEL) Management Program and ensure timely repair of deferred items
- Review and approve changes to Approved Aircraft Inspection Programs, Minimum Equipment Lists and Aircraft Conformity Documentation
- Ensure maintenance personnel are provided access to the General Operations Manual, the applicable manufacturer maintenance manuals, service bulletins, service letters, airworthiness directives and any other required technical data
- Issue Maintenance Memorandums and periodically review these memos for continued validity and pertinence
- Act as designee to apply for and receive the Operations Specifications per 14 CFR Part 119

- Assist the Part 145 Director of Maintenance in providing oversight and guidance to the Maintenance Training Department. Support collaboration on curriculum development, review training materials for accuracy and compliance, and help monitor training effectiveness through audits and feedback

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSA)
- Extensive knowledge of 14 CFR Part 135 operations and regulatory requirements
- Strong understanding of aircraft maintenance procedures, airworthiness standards, and quality assurance practices
- Working knowledge of 14 CFR Parts 43, 91, 119, and 145, as well as applicable Advisory Circulars and FAA guidance material
- Experience with FAA correspondence, Operations Specifications, and certification processes
- Proven ability to develop and implement maintenance policies, procedures, and safety protocols
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to effectively manage and mentor maintenance teams
- Strong decision-making abilities with sound judgment, objectivity, and accountability
- Ability to evaluate and implement changes in regulatory or operational environments
- Skilled in planning and forecasting aircraft maintenance schedules, downtime, and resource allocation
- Ability to build and maintain positive, collaborative relationships with internal departments, external vendors, and regulatory agencies
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to work with diverse personalities and professional backgrounds
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace applications
- Demonstrated experience with SharePoint and electronic document management systems
- Familiarity with Maintenance Tracking Systems
- Ability to interpret and apply technical data, manufacturer manuals, service bulletins, and airworthiness directives
- Knowledge of fuel quality control, MEL management, and conformity inspection processes
- Ability to lead audits, manage findings, and support continuous improvement initiatives
- Commitment to fostering a culture of safety, compliance, and professionalism across all maintenance operations
Education & Experience
- Must possess a valid FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) Certificate
- Minimum of ten (10) years of experience as a subject matter expert in Part 135 operations
- Bachelor’s degree in Aviation Management, Business, or related field preferred
- Experience with Part 145 FAA repair station structure and regulatory requirements
- Familiarity with STC certification processes and the FAA Field Approval process, including associated workflows
